Smarten Up! Monday: Where the Heck is Nicaragua?

Nicaragua.

Probably most famous at the moment for the setting of the current and previous season of Survivor.

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America, neighboring Honduran, Costa Rica, The Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.

Apparently The Christopher Columbus was the first European to reach what is now Nicaragua in 1502.

Come on Chris, let some others join in on the whole discovering coutries thing.

Nicaragua is about the size of Alabama.

If you’re like me you have never had a reason to visit Alabama and only know that it is the mirror image of Mississippi (which I havent been to either).

Their current President, Daniel Ortega doesn’t seem to be doing much for the poor economic state of Nicaragua.

He must be too busy putting together mediocre taco kits for grocery stores in America.

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the Americas, relies heavily on economic assistance and 79.9% live with less than $2 per day.

Baseball is big in Nicaragua and they have even exported some great MLB players to us here in the north.

Expos great Dennis Martinez was the first Nicaraguan to play and currently Vincent Padilla and Devern Hansack are following in his footsteps.
